Description of Series
Records created by departments of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This parent series covers the period from the establishment of the Commonwealth Bank in 1911 until the Reserve Bank Act 1959 separated the Commonwealth Bank’s central banking functions from its commercial banking activities. The Commonwealth Bank was renamed the Reserve Bank of Australia, which acted as the nation’s central bank and was constituted separately from the newly created Commonwealth Banking Corporation, which operated as a trading bank. The Reserve Bank of Australia commenced operations on 14 January 1960 marking the end of this parent series.
Each series within the Commonwealth Bank Departments parent series identifies a group of records that were created by a specific department of the Bank during the course of their work. The sub-series within each series indicate the range of functions performed by each department as well as the types of topics that can be found in that series.
Some departments continued to exist after separation. Any series created by departments which continued after 14 January 1960 are listed in Parent Series Index: Reserve Bank Departments.
