Collection summaryThe State Savings Bank of Tasmania series consists of ledgers, bound volumes, files, loose papers, pass books, booklets and pamphlets relating to the everyday business of the bank. The earliest records in this series are the registers of deposits for the Avoca and Fingal branches dating from 1896 when the branches were operating as Post Office Savings Banks. The majority of the records cover the period of 1906 to 1912 ending when the business of the State Savings Bank was transferred to the Commonwealth Bank as a result of its amalgamation. The Commonwealth Bank officially took over the business of the State Savings Bank of Tasmania on 1 January 1913.

Description of series

Scope

The records in this series relate to the various functions of the State Savings Bank of Tasmania and include account ledgers, pass books, registers of deposits, declarations, forms and legislation. The earliest records are registers of deposits from the Avoca and Fingal branches dating from 1896. The majority of the records cover the period from 1906 to 1912 ending when the business of the State Savings Bank was transferred to the Commonwealth Bank as a result of its amalgamation.

Types of Material

The main types of material in this series are:

Depositors’ ledgers: information about account holders such as the name of the account holder, their occupation and details of transactions.

Declarations: forms and letters to officially notify the Bank of events effecting accounts including the first deposit made, the closure of a deceased depositors accounts and the loss of a pass book.

Pass books: information including the name, signature and address of the account holder and a list of all the transactions for the account.

Forms: specimen and completed forms relating to everyday banking business such as telegraphic withdrawals, joint accounts, deposits, payments and withdrawals.

Biographical/historical notes

Background

The earliest facilities for savings banking in Tasmania were set up in 1828 by the directors of the Derwent Bank to receive the compulsory savings deposits of convicts. The first Tasmanian private savings bank, the General Savings Bank, was established in 1931 to meet the needs of emancipists and free settlers with other savings banks being established in the 1830s and 1840s. By the time the Post Office Savings Bank was established in the second half of the century, savings banking was well represented in Tasmania.

Establishment

The first Post Office Savings Banks were opened in Tasmania in 1882 following the passing of Act 45 Victoria No. 13 in 1881 which provided for their establishment. The Post Office Savings Banks operated until 1901 when an Act to regulate the State Savings Bank of Tasmania repealed the relevant sections of the 1881 Act. The State Savings Bank of Tasmania commenced business on 1 July 1902. The Bank was successful and over the next decade attracted 26,000 depositors.

Amalgamation

In 1912 the State Savings Bank Transfer Act was passed, authorising the transfer of the business of the State Savings Bank to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The amalgamation became effective from 1 January 1913. On 2 January 1913 the Savings Bank Department of the Commonwealth Bank opened for business at Hobart and at 14 Post Office agencies throughout the State.

Arrangement description

The series is arranged by a numeric system. All depositors’ ledgers were maintained at Hobart, the Chief Office, and were accessioned as such.
