Description of series

The records relate to the various functions of the banks and include ledgers, forms, deposits, withdrawals and correspondence. There are some passbooks from individual depositors’ accounts.

Depositors’ ledgers: Contain information such the name of the account holder and details of account transactions. Some ledgers also have occupation and address details.

Passbooks: Record name and signature, occupation and address. List all transactions on the bank account. Contains ‘Regulations for the Information of Depositors’.

Signature registers: Include account number, signature of account holder and sometimes extra information such as account passwords or physical description of account holder. An ‘X’ and a password are attached to the accounts of illiterate people.

Security registers: Record name, address, account number, numbers of bonds or certificates, dollar amount, maturity date, signature, rate of interest (bonds only), when interest is due (bonds only).

Biographical/historical notes

The Government Savings Banks Act 1864 established the Queensland Government Savings Bank, which began operations the following year. At this time the Bank also absorbed the Moreton Bay Savings Bank (1856–65). This change introduced a new way of operating that included postmasters acting as bank agencies, banking by post, withdrawals by telegraph and the abolition of signature registrations.

The Bank operated as the Queensland Government Savings Bank until 7 December 1920 when it amalgamated with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and was absorbed into it.
