Description of Series
Records produced by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia branches, including a network of commercial banking branches across all Australian states and overseas branches in London and New York. These records date from the establishment of the Commonwealth Bank in 1911 until the Reserve Bank Act 1959 separated the Commonwealth Bank’s central banking functions from its commercial banking activities. The Commonwealth Bank was renamed the Reserve Bank of Australia, which acted as the nation’s central bank and was constituted separately from the newly created Commonwealth Banking Corporation, which operated as a trading bank. The Reserve Bank of Australia commenced operations on 14 January 1960 marking the end of this parent series.
Each series contains the records produced by a particular branch of the Commonwealth Bank during the course of their work.
